Domenic Sarno's Lifelong Commitment to Springfield

Born to Italian immigrants Alfonso and Clara Sarno, Domenic grew up in Springfield along with his siblings Joanna and Alfonso. His parents established two small businesses in Springfield, Al's Barber Shop and Clara's Alterations, to provide for their family. Domenic spent his youth at his parents' shops where he developed his love for Springfield and its citizens. While observing his parents at work, Domenic learned not only to treat others with dignity and respect but also to approach their concerns as his own.

Domenic attended Springfield's High School of Commerce where he excelled in both academics and athletics. He was also elected class president his freshman and junior years. A multi-sport athlete, Domenic was elected to the All-Western Mass soccer team and the All-City League in baseball.

After high school, Domenic studied political science at American International College and later graduated from Westfield State College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. His academic success continued at the college level; he was inducted to the National Honors Society while a student at Westfield State.

After college, Domenic worked as a mayoral aide under Mayor Mary Hurley and developed an extensive knowledge of Springfield's executive office. He then worked alongside District Attorney William Bennett for six years in the Hampden County District Attorney's Office and observed first-hand how crime can damage the community and impede the development of our children. Armed with this knowledge and experience, Domenic is able and determined to protect the people of Springfield.

Later, Domenic was elected to the Springfield City Council where he served for four terms (including one term as Council President and another as a member of the Control Board). While serving on the City Council, he established himself as a leading voice in Springfield and a proud representative of his constituents.

In November 2007, Domenic was elected Mayor of Springfield. Subsequent to his administration taking office in January 2008, Mayor Sarno has spearheaded a successful effort to reduce crime and has led with an infectious optimism which has and will continue to result in a better Springfield for each and every citizen.
